"OUR ESKIES" American Eskimo Information:
WHAT THEY ARE LIKE TO LIVE WITH..................
HISTORY:
Nearly fifty years ago, Circus Trainer Caleb Thompson, toured the United States and Canada
with two animal acts featuring all white horsed and small white dogs. He bred horses and trained the animals
on his White Horse Ranch in Nebraska, and established a school to teach horsemanship and animal training
there. The breed of dog feature in his trick animal acts was the American Eskimo, a spitz dog with a
colorful history typically a northern dog in appearance. The American Eskimo's bright appealing temperament,
skill and snowy white coat made him a favorite with circus audiences whether he rode in a cart pulled
by other dogs or pulled a small cart himself, rode horseback, or accomplished a variety of other feats.
Circuses have gone by the wayside for the most part, but the Eskie still puts on his show on in living rooms
all over the country as he delights owners, friends and their families with their pranks and abilities as they
will stand on the back feet and twirl around, dance and walk
for everyone as this is what our Cheyenne and B utton Sahara will do on any given day.
They are a delight and amuse everyone at all of our family gatherings.
PERSONALITY:
Temperament of the American Eskimo........
The American Eskimo is a fun loving, bright, playful and affectionate dog.
They are alert and intelligent and perfectly willing to guard their family when necessary,
they love to please and are very easy to train, they are very loyal to their master. Eskies like to
work and often rank very high in obedience trials. They need lots of love and attention and do best with
outdoor activities. They need long daily walks, and love nothing better than to play a good game of
frisbee or catch, and they love to walk on beaches.
**They are best suited to be kept indoors, the Eskie likes to be part of the family and they also
like to sleep indoors near the family they love so much.
**In hot climates they need air conditioning due to their heavy coats.
They do not do well as an *outside dog. If it rains, sleets and snows on them
and then they dry and this happens repeatedly their fur will get matted
and knots will form all over their front and back legs as well as on their back.
It is nota pretty site. In my opinion the American Eskimo Dog
is just too beautiful and they have come to far to be left out side.
Their looks will suffer greatly when left outside.
I like for the puppies I sell to be kept
inside the home and not outside in a kennel or dog house.
*The winters are extremely cold in many
parts of the United States, they like the cold for a while but should be kept inside.

CHARACTER:
They are charming, intelligent, warm, friendly, inquistive and playful.
The American Eskimo Dogs are absolutely wonderful to live with. It is a fun-loving and outgoing dog,
eager to meet everyone. Their loyalty to family and home can be intense: Some will keep
strangers from entering your home until their owner gives their approval. This makes them a
superb watch dog--they are protective without being agressive. They are very good around children,
the American Eskimo can maintain its puppy-like demeanor through the first year of life. All in all,
eskies makes great pals.American Eskimo Dogs are very good to adapting their keen intelligence
to many tasks and projects. They are easily trained and so eager to please.
GROOMING: ~~~~~~~~~~The American Eskimo loves to be brushe and pampered.
It feels so good on their skin and it actually relaxes their body. Their coat needs brushing to prevent mats
and tangles, particularly around the ears and tail. They have a thick double coat and it should be
kept clean. This is easily done with a good brushing twice a week however when shedding brushing
should be done more often. {Note} Some people prefer to brush more often than twice a week.
THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW...................
American Eskimo Dogs have been devoted companions for centuries. They need to be around
people and be involved in family occasions. These dogs will be perfectly happy in apartments as long as
they get plenty of exercise--a good daily walk will do fine. They don't need to much room to roam because
they are just happy being with their family. Their quickness for learning tricks and playing
games makes them a fine companion for a moderate active family.
The Eskies are especially good with children, they are soft, gentle and happy pets, responsive to games and
positive play. Children and Eskies can be best of friends, however small children need supervision around new
puppies or dogs. Some children and adult men will tease or aggravate puppies or dog, and American Eskimo's
are very smart, they do not tolerate being picked on.
So please, for the sake of any breed, do not allow them to be picked on by anyone....
HEALTH AND CARE:
The Eskie is a long-lived breed with few identified problems.
Life span: Normal life expecancy is around sixteen (16) years.
They are a normally healthy breed although attention should be given to the eyes.
